Review: The Fable

More amazing food than a night of fairytale fun
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, two young ladies were in desperate need of something to eat for dinner. They searched high and low through the concrete jungle of London town, finally stumbling across The Fable...

If you haven't already guessed, The Fable is a fairytale themed bar in restaurant.

The restaurant in Holborn is set over three floors, and looking at their website, it looked like it would be a trip down the rabbit hole, with fairytale references at every corner.

Once sat down, we had a chance to peruse not just the menu, but take in the atmosphere. From the off I got the impression that this venue is more of a bar where you can eat as opposed to a restaurant where you can grab a drink. And the reason for this, well it was hard to ignore, was the loud, nay too loud, music.

To start we ordered tempura crispy squid with ginger & firecracker sauce. When it arrived, not only did it look incredibly tasty, but the presentation was fabulous. Chintz plates, miniature milk urns for the sauces, it was like dining at my nans – which if you're wondering, is always a good thing.

The presentation gave the dish that home cooking feel, but the food on them gave the wow factor.

For the main, steak and meat pie, again a home cooked feeling, gourmet taste. Easily one of the best pies and steaks I've had in a very long time. And again great presentation.

Only just being able to finish our mains we decided against dessert. But if you go and can manage something sweet, there are plenty of options on the menu to tickle your taste buds; from brownie to syllabub and ice-cream.

Sadly for me, the website gives away the best bits The Fable has to offer, like a fantastic trailer for a mediocre film.

There are just so many more possibilities here, if you're going to do a theme, go all out or don't bother. Ok so Aesop's table (the booth made entirely from books) is very cool, but why just the one?! There are three floors!

On top of that the incredibly loud music was more of a nightmare than fairytale dream. Yes I understand it is a bar and a restaurant, but with three floors I fail to see why one of the floors couldn't be allocated a quiet, ambient space for eating. As it was, dinner conversation was more like dinner shouting - I could have agreed to giving my friend a kidney and I wouldn't have known.

Despite this, the food is amazing. Beautifully presented on quaint crockery (who knew that crockery envy was a thing!), great portions sizes, and just great food, you'd be hard pushed to go wrong.

Go to The Fable for amazing food, not a fairytale evening.
