Review: Pizza Union
Pizza Union is London's first pizza bar. Yes that's right, a bar dedicated to pizza. Obviously upon hearing of its opening I grabbed my bag and set off to grab a table at the new venue.
The idea behind the restaurant is all-day convenience. You queue to order your pizza (either one off the menu or go wild and customise your own) and then your super thin, 12" pizza is with you in around 3-5 minutes. This is fast-food that actually tastes pretty good.
The venue itself has a very chilled out feel to it, sharing long tables or more intimate tables for two or smaller groups.
On ordering our pizzas and drinks (there is a fridge of beers and soft drinks and when it comes to wine there is the choice of red or white- why complicate things with a ridiculously long wine?) we were handed a device that buzzes when our food was ready to collect form the counter.
I'd barely had a sip of my wine and the buzzing commenced. Our Roman style pizzas cooked in a traditional stone oven smelt amazing. I loved the open kitchen because you could see all the fresh ingredients being used for the pizzas. I couldn't wait to dive in!
For the amount of pizza and quality ingredients used the price is amazing. A standard margherita comes in at under £4 which is cheaper than a standard, or even large, meal at a number of our well know fast-food chains. How can you go wrong?!
As a dessert girl I can happily report that the dessert does not disappoint. The Dolce - now prepare yourself for the amazingness I'm about to share with you - is a dough ring filled with Nutella and mascarpone which is then cooked in the oven and topped with a dusting off icing sugar. We were brought over one to share between us but take my advice and have no shame in ordering a whole one for yourself. The combination of warm, gooey Nutella and mascarpone with the saltiness of the dough was, well epic really. Dessert heaven.
The best thing about this place, obviously other than the amazingly fresh produce used, is the speed. If you work in the area it's the perfect place to grab lunch and a quick bite to eat after work. It brings fast-food a whole new meaning, it doesn't have to be served in a box or paper bag, it can be good food made with care. And the value is incredible. Fancy dinner out with friends but it's the end of the month? Pizza Union is the perfect place to enjoy great food at an amazing price.
