Here’s one for golfers: tour operator the Tailor-Made Groups Company has joined forces with Great Golf Magazine to launch Great Golf Adventures. Group or individual tours can be booked, which take in many countries, including India.
Highlights of the six-day Golf and Houseboats in Kashmir trip, for instance, include four rounds of golf at courses including Gulmarg, with the highest greens in the world, and Kashmir – the second oldest course outside the UK – a guided tour of Srinagar, and a boat trip on Dal Lake. Four nights will be spent on a traditional Kashmiri houseboat and one night in a Delhi hotel.
The trip costs from £895 per person (for two sharing), including domestic, but not international, flights, all land transport, five nights’ B&B, activities, and a tour leader.
Some fathers might prefer something closer to home, so how about a fishing trip to beautiful Pembrokeshire? Run by former World and European Champion fisherman Ian Heaps, who says it is his ideal location, the Premier Fisheries and School of Angling, near Narberth in Pembrokeshire, offers overnight bed and breakfast, and includes coarse fishing for carp, tench, roach and bream on its private lakes.
Prices start from £60 per person per night with two days’ fishing, up to £335 for a week’s stay and eight days’ fishing. Tuition with Ian can be pre-booked for all levels, from beginners to experienced anglers wishing to improve, from £75 per day.
Finally, if the Vikings: Life And Legend exhibition at the British Museum (until 22 June) reignited Dad’s passion for all things Viking, head over to Denmark for a minibreak, with the chance for him to dress up as a Norseman and even have a go at rowing a Viking ship.
The Land of Legends open-air museum in Lejre, Denmark, centre of power at the start of the Viking Age, features a recreation of the Viking market town of Ravnsborg and a storeroom full of authentic costumes visitors can wear for the day.
Another must-see attraction is the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, featuring five restored Viking ships found at the bottom of the Roskilde Fjord in 1960.
After a good look round, you can even have a go at rowing a ship out into the fjord, operating massive, and very heavy, oars.
Stay at the 34-room Dragsholm Slot. It’s not Viking, but it is one of the oldest castles in Denmark and it’s very atmospheric.
