Interviewing your Nanny or Governess

Interviewing your Nanny / Governess

The Lady has over 100 years of experience in sourcing and providing our clients with the very best candidates and our Nannies have gone on to be selected by Royal Households and many large and small domestic homes across the country. We only consider those Nannies with proper experience and/or qualifications that reflect a good character and clear understanding of the duties and responsibilities required. We take our recruitment role very seriously and always prioritise the needs of our clients.

Our specialist professional recruitment process and team of dedicated consultants ensures you will only be sent CVs that we consider worth seeing and those candidates that we consider appropriate for your particular advertised role, in accordance with your specifications. We filter our job enquiries, select and pre-interview our candidates, checking DBS and safe-guarding documents are all in place and up-to-date.

Once you have decided on a short-list and we have interviewed your chosen candidates for Nanny/Governess we will arrange for you to meet her, whether in person or via Skype. It is a good idea to have some questions prepared and be ready to take notes from the interview. Remember that the interview is about understanding how and if you can work together and you must feel completely comfortable with one another and you must feel instinctively that you can trust this person with your children and your home.

Although our recruitment team will have informed the candidate on the general expected duties, it is wise to begin the interview by giving the candidate further information of your domestic routine and the expectations you have of their role and the duties you require covered or supported with.  You will then see how the candidate responds and whether they interact with you in a manner you feel comfortable with.

Questions to help you form your interview:

  • What skills, qualities and attributes that you are looking for in a Nanny?
  • What hours will you want them to work and what time will they have off per week?
  • What salary, holiday and benefits are you offering?
  • What are your house rules, rewards and flexibility, for example does the Nanny eat with your children and how often is she expected to babysit on a monthly basis on top of her ordinary working hours?

Questions to help you interview your next Nanny:

  • What experience do you have in a similar role?
  • What made you choose childcare as a career?
  • What do you enjoy about working with children?
  • Give an example of using your creative initiative during a rainy day
  • Do you have relevant qualifications / training?
  • Why did you leave your last job?
  • How would you deal with overtired children who are fighting?
  • How would you deal with a fussy eater?
  • Give an example of an emergency and how you would deal with it
  • What do you do in your spare time - do you have a partner who might visit?

After the interview and once you have had time to consider we will speak with you and feedback to the candidate/s. Once you have decided on the next steps you can invite the candidate back for a second interview if you like them.
