The skies are blue, the sun is shining - and you are looking out on it all from your office window while rushing to finish that report that was due last week! While the warm weather can provide a mental boost for many people, it is estimated that around 80% of office workers in the UK feel burnt out, meaning it could be time to switch on those ‘out of offices’ and book a short break.
Booking a holiday can not only a great way to top up your tan, but can actually be really great for your mental health. Abie Taylor-Spencer from Smart TMS is here to detail exactly why you need to book a holiday this summer!
Anticipation
The benefits of a holiday can begin even before you even jet off! Having something positive to look forward to can improve our overall sense of well-being and can actually help to overcome stressful situations. Research has found that thinking about a future event, such as an imminent holiday, can reduce impulsive behaviour. Many people also report that anticipating experiences is more enjoyable than looking forward to material gifts – in this case, a holiday can be even more exciting than your birthday, or Christmas! Therefore, even booking a holiday can reduce stress, and enable us to better deal with stressful situations.
Sunny Moods
Simply travelling to a warmer climate can have a positive impact on mental and physical health. Sunlight exposure has been linked to increased serotonin release and vitamin D production. Not only that, vitamin D is great for your bones, skin and provides an immune system boost to help you fight off any illness.
Research has found that a deficiency of vitamin D and serotonin could be connected to depression, therefore catching those extra rays could be great for your mood. Additionally, serotonin is important for mood regulation and your sleep-wake cycle. So, soak up those rays, but don't forget your sun cream!
