HOME REMEDY: APPLES

Home remedies for all your ailments
We all know fresh fruit and vegetables are essential for a healthy diet, but each is rich in the di erent nutrients that our bodies need. Quercetin, for example, is found in red onions and sorrel, and is thought to have antiin ammatory properties, which may help alleviate hay-fever symptoms. And carrots are full of beta carotene (the red/orange pigment, which is also a form of vitamin A) so these are good for skin and eyes.

But the latest research highlights the bene’ ts of the humble apple – with folklore once again being proved right by scientists. Indeed, the well-known saying: ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away,’ really does have the ring of truth. For a study conducted by Florida State University found that apples can reduce cholesterol in post-menopausal women.

The study’s subjects ate 75mg of dried apple (about two fresh apples) daily and after six months, their total cholesterol was reduced by 13 per cent, with LDL cholesterol, the oft-called ‘bad cholesterol’, down by 24 per cent .

Owing to depleted hormones after the menopause, cholesterol levels rise in women, so if this is your concern, follow the folklore and eat a few apples a day.
