My grandma’s remedies: Rapeseed Oil

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
Originally used to lubricate steam engines, you wouldn’t think it would offer many health benefits for the rest of us. But rapeseed oil is certainly something to stock in your larder. It has half the saturated fat of olive oil and is high in mono and polyunsaturated fats, both of which can improve blood cholesterol levels, decreasing the risk of heart disease.

It is high in omega 3, 6 and 9, which help the body to function normally. Plant sterols, which are thought to help lower cholesterol, are also found in the oil. As well as being a natural antioxidant it is a rich source of vitamin E, which helps maintain cell structure by protecting cell membranes and fending off damaging free radicals.

It has a high smoke point, making it a perfect, healthy alternative for deep-frying and roasting. And best of all, it’s grown here in Britain.
