My grandmother’s remedies: Liquorice

Melonie Clarke passes on some family health wisdom
Liquorice has all sorts of health benefits. Also known as Glycyrrhiza glabra, liquorice is not just a delicious treat, it can help to fight bronchitis and coughs as it stimulates mucus production, loosening phlegm. It is also thought to help reduce stomach acid and fight heartburn and indigestion. Some research has shown it is effective in the healing of mouth ulcers and urinary tract infections, too.

Liquorice is also believed to ease inflammatory conditions such as eczema, arthritis and asthma. It is much less effective in sweet form, and it is recommended that to gain the best results as a natural remedy, you should take 1g-5g dried liquorice root a day.

Although it is a natural remedy, taking too much can lead to side effects, of which the most serious is raised blood pressure – but headaches, water retention and lethargy are also possible. However, this is only in its pure root form – if you’ve just gorged on a whole packet of liquorice allsorts, there’s no need to panic!
