HOME REMEDY: The fast diet

Fast as in ‘fasting’ rather than speedy, but some fans say it is both. This is the new fad, just like the Dukan diet was last year’s diet. The idea is you eat as per normal for five days out of seven, so long as you ‘fast’ on two non-consecutive days; they don’t have to be ‘total’ fasts – you still eat a little (women can eat 500 calories, men can eat 600).

As regular readers know, I am not a fan of diets, but this one caught my eye. The idea of fasting is good from a health point of view. Giving your body a rest, assuming you don’t go overboard on a nonfasting day, is no bad thing in this age of sugar, processed food and meat in the daily diet. Sometimes the amount, and kind of food, is more taxing on our bodies than beneficial.

In my 20s, I often went on fruit fasts and felt invigorated afterwards, but now my best friend and my husband are both on this diet, maybe I’ll follow suit and give it a go.

If I do, I’ll let you know how I fare.
