HOME REMEDY: Expectorant

At this time of year, when the cold weather makes us hunch up and winter bugs can settle on the chest, it is a good idea to keep everything moving.

Last week I wrote about easy home remedies from the kitchen cupboard. Here is a great onion-and-garlic-based, warming expectorant to help promote secretion. Jill Davies, from Herbs Hands Healing, gave me this recipe…
  • 2 white onions, peeled
  • 1 head garlic, peeled
  • Fresh horseradish (or 1 tbsp from a jar)
  • Some of the hottest chillies you can bear
  • 20 black peppercorns
  • 1 litre organic cider vinegar

Chop all the ingredients in a blender to a fine consistency. Pour this into several large jars and leave to steep for at least two days (the longer you leave it, the stronger it gets).Take a teaspoon of this when you need it. This is good for colds and flu and deep-rooted coughs. If it’s too strong, you can add juice, or honey, to it, though I think it’s good to make the most of its savoury and hot nature – you can even add it to salad dressings.
