He's handsome, clever and an Oscar contender (again). Susan Griffin remembers meeting the charming Mr Clooney
George Clooney knows how to work a room. He’s like a charismatic politician – or, say, a heroic astronaut just returned from a groundbreaking mission into space.

When I met him last year in Cancun, Mexico, he was wearing cream trousers, a short-sleeved top – and a disarmingly warm grin. And that was despite the sore head. ‘I gave some of my soul to the Tequila god last night,’ he joked.

His latest film, Gravity, is tipped to put him in Oscar contention – again (he has already won two Academy Awards, as producer for Argo – the film won Best Picture – and as Best Supporting Actor in Syriana). Starring alongside Sandra Bullock, he plays an astronaut marooned in orbit when a debris shower destroys their spacecraft hundreds of miles above the Earth.

If you were to be stranded in space, you certainly could do worse than have George Clooney with you. He is charm personified. But while he is now a global icon, it wasn’t always this way...
