FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LULU
My new glasses range. There is a cool factor about wearing glasses today. It used to be seen as quite geeky, but geeky is now good. I have just come back from America, where I was gigging in a blues club. I have been on QVC here for fi ve years and we have been selling out with the Time Bomb skincare line. I now have a jewellery range as well. I am going to do my fi rst QVC show in America soon.
When are you at your happiest?
Well, happy comes, happy goes, but I think a momentous moment was the birth of my son and then the birth of my grandchildren. There are lots of times when I have been happy and lots of times when I have been miserable. What is your greatest fear? Losing my voice.
What is your earliest memory?
I can remember my father walking around the house singing as clear as a bell. He never really wanted me to be a singer... it was all about singing in the house, a passion, not a means to an end. He used to sing all the time.
Who has been your greatest influence?
I don’t have one; I have a lot of influences. In music, perhaps Ray Charles, but maybe I should say that one of my greatest infl uences was my manager, Marion. She is the one who fi rst introduced me to your magazine – she used to get her nannies from The Lady.
What do you most dislike about yourself?
Depends on the moment, you know. I don’t like to go there as I can write long lists and I don’t want to do that. It is being negative.
What is your most treasured possession?
Right now, it is my grandchildren. I have two. Bella is three years old and Teddy is eight months. They are so cute.
What trait do you most deplore in others?
I’ve come to the understanding, late in life, that most people don’t know what the hell they are doing and they are doing the best they can. So I don’t think about it – being judgmental can be a slippery slope.
Do you have a fantasy address?
I would love to hang out at The White House. I would just hang around with Barack and if he had any free time we could have a wee singsong. He is so cool.
What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I’d like to be a bit taller.
What is your favourite book?
Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father. I think he is a great writer. I was fascinated to read what makes this man who he is and was completely absorbed.
What is your favourite film?
At the moment, Argo – and that is because it is all about Ben Affleck. With that beard and the haircut – I have no shame. Wholly my type.
What is your favourite record or piece of music?
Oh, well I am crazy for anything Emeli Sandé does – love her.
What is your favourite meal?
My son has a restaurant, Trullo, and the food is fabulous.
Who would you most like to come to dinner?
Michelle Obama and Beyoncé – because they are friends – with Barack Obama and Jay-Z. Oh, and Ben Affleck – he’s very intelligent and he happens to look rather candy-like.
What is the nastiest thing anyone has said to you?
‘That was rubbish.’ It was probably me saying it to myself in the mirror.
Do you believe in aliens?
I don’t disbelieve but it’s not something that I think about.
What is your secret vice?
Sugar – in almost any form. Tablet (Scottish fudge) is pure deliciousness.
Do you write thank-you notes?
No.
Which phrase do you most overuse?
‘Rubbish.’ That’s one of my favourite sayings, ‘Oh, she’s rubbish... he’s rubbish’, because it’s funny. It’s a funny put-down, and I usually do it tongue-in-cheek.
What single thing would improve your quality of life?
That’s a tough one... I’d love to be able to remove the worrywart inside, to have it removed. ‘There’s the door, worry, now get out!’
What would you like your epitaph to be?
‘There was more to her than met the eye.’
