Café Rouge, a relaxed restaurant serving favourites of French cuisine, have recently launched their Spring/Summer menu for patrons to enjoy. The Gourmet Girls were invited to their Covent Garden branch on 34 Street Wellington to sample some delicious lunch time dishes. The atmosphere of Café Rogue is always vibrant, bustling with people seeking a quality meal at affordable prices. We were greeted with grins from ear to ear and lead to a large table under a skylight- that was only the beginning of the exceptional service we experienced throughout the meal.
We started lunch with mock tails and nibbles. I opted for a French Garden Fizz complete with elderflower petal, fresh mint, lemon and lime juice. I ordered the Plateau de Pain for the table with a selection of chargrilled sourdough bread, a wedge of rye, caraway bread and classic baguette accompanied by plain and 'Café de Paris' butter. Café de Paris butter, a proud favourite of Café Rouge, bursts with 22 ingredients including anchovy, capers, tarragon, parsley and paprika- don't miss this if you're dining here.
For mains, I went with Confit De Canard, or duck. The half Brittany duck leg was slow cooked and came with homemade dauphinoise potatoes, French beans and orange sauce (although there was also a cherry option). The duck practically fell off the bone, while the beans were fresh and cooked al dente. The dauphinoise was a little different to how I was anticipating- I had only ever tried dauphinoise soft and served with a cream sauce, however, these potatoes came in a baked slice. They completed the nutritional trio of protein, vegetables and carbs wonderfully.
I couldn't possibly finish the meal without a fine French dessert. I ordered the Torte au Chocolat, a French chocolate torte with vanilla crème fraiche. Although the rich multilayered cake excelled in sweet milk chocolate flavour and was complimented by the semi bitter crème fraiche, I was a little too indulgent in my choices for a lunchtime seating. Having said this, I wouldn't hesitate to return as I have many times before to Café Rogue, for a fantastic meal with great service without breaking the bank!
