…AND TO DRINK?

This week: Wines for healthy food
My wife has decreed that 2014 will be the year of healthy eating. She claims it’s nothing to do with the new pudginess around my middle but I can’t help noticing the coincidence. My wife is from California, so healthy eating comes naturally to her. From now on we’re going to be eating a lot more vegetables, fish, salad, quinoa (pronounced ‘keen wah’, apparently) and a lot less of the stuff I love, such as bacon, butter and pasta. It also means no refined sugar, which I’m OK with. So, what am I going to drink with all this light food?

Château du Cléray Muscadet de Sèvre-et- Maine Sur Lie 2012, £8.99 when you buy two bottles: 0845-605 6767, www.majestic.co.uk
Muscadet is the ultimate fish wine. This is a superior example being extremely dry and concentrated with some lemon rind notes and a saline tang.

Domaine de la Mirande Picpoul de Pinet 2012, £9.25: 020-7584 7927, www.hhandc.co.uk
Richer and rounder than most wines from the region and just the thing if supper’s a bit bland.

Konrad Closheim Löhrer Berg Riesling 2011, £12.95: 01295-672294, www.hawksheadwines.co.uk
I’ll be drinking more Rieslings like this one in 2014. It has just a hint of sweetness so would go well with something Vietnamese or Thai.

Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Gruner Veltliner 2013, £12.75: 01225-322810, www.greatwesternwine.co.uk
This is the first time I’ve had this grape from New Zealand. It has that peppery note you’d expect but it’s fatter and bolder than Austrian versions with just a hint of sweetness, so another one to go with spicy food.
